Confessions of A Breathwork Expert – A Journey Worth Going On

What Happened?

So, this past weekend I facilitated a transformational breathwork journey at a bespoke wellness retreat near my home.

Having moved back home from the UK last Christmas, I have been actively seeking to build my professional network in the area. As part of this, I am currently collaborating with Creacon Wellness Retreat, New Ross, delivering breathwork journeys to their client list.

No Pressure…

This has been an enjoyable journey, think about it… I am rubbing shoulders with experts in the wellness industry, and at the same time, I am attracting clients who are already avid participants in everything from mindfulness to yoga and everything in between.

No pressure then! My first workshop was quite an experience. I was nervous and checked if my t’s were crossed and i’s were dotted – a few times!

I have a habit I always run through when I am nervous about work. I mean, I have facilitated plenty of breathwork events at this stage, so why the heck would I be nervous? Full disclosure – I still do get nervous. Maybe I have high functioning anxiety, maybe I am overly conscientious, or maybe it’s something else… but how I overcome it, is well you guessed it…. Breathwork (+ a little reframe of my mind).

Nervous or Excited?

So, physiologically the signs of nervousness are the same as excitement… increased heart rate, sweating, fast shallow breathing, racing mind, etc…

So the reframe? I LITERALLY tell myself I am “so excited for this” (which I also really was), then as I’m building up to the event, I constantly check in and ask “Jesus Seamus, how exciting is this?” The mind must check the body for signs of excitement because I get a thumbs-up each time!

The Event

Anyway, I digress…. Back to the event.

In front of me stood a group of seasoned wellness practitioners, each one experienced in various modalities of change. I will admit that I had a mind fart right beforehand, where I fleetingly thought – “Don’t feck this up man, they’ll see right through you”… But I brushed that aside and engaged in some pleasantries on their arrival.

The group was a mixed bag. Young and old, male and female. All united with a common goal – to transcend stress and anxiety, through the ancient art of breathwork…. Hosted by an expert (Oh sweet Jesus)

I won’t go into detail but suffice to say that these folks were flippin’ rockstars. Every. Last. One of them!

There was a massive effort from everyone, huge somatic releases, the odd laugh, and even the odd tear.

But afterwards, wide-eyed humans wondering wtf just happened, stood before me as an even more united – a group with a common experience!

I don’t remember driving the ten minutes home, but to say I was on cloud nine myself would be modest. I had just facilitated an event for individuals who know their sh1t… That’s a win in my book. I guess I will keep on breathing after all…
